Abstract

The expansion of internet-based gambling has increased adolescents' access to betting activities that may be associated with psychological problems. This study aimed to analyze the relationship and statistical contribution of online gambling problem severity to depression and anxiety among students at MTs Tanjung Genting. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed. The sample consisted of 32 students selected purposively. Gambling problem severity was measured using the Indonesian version of the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), while depression and anxiety were measured using the Indonesian version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21). The analyses included descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The results showed a mean PGSI score of 6.88 (SD = 3.65), a depression score of 16.31 (SD = 7.87), and an anxiety score of 17.00 (SD = 8.99). PGSI scores were positively correlated with depression (r = 0.720; p < 0.001) and anxiety (r = 0.672; p < 0.001). Simple linear regression showed that PGSI scores explained 51.8% of the variance in depression scores (R² = 0.518) and 45.2% of the variance in anxiety scores (R² = 0.452). The findings indicate that higher online gambling problem severity was associated with higher symptoms of depression and anxiety among the respondents. School-based prevention should integrate digital literacy, gambling-risk education, self-regulation strengthening, guidance and counseling services, and parental involvement. Because the study used a cross-sectional design, the results indicate statistical relationships and contributions and should not be interpreted as evidence of causality.
